In 2018, Rapinoe was appointed cocaptain. Rapinoe was able to score two goals in the United States beat Australia 4-3 in the bronze medal match in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Japan had been prevented from attending the Olympics until 2021 because of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
